As compensation for his bravery and faith, King Afonso Henriques named the whole region after him - Martim-Chel - which over time became Martinchel. There are, however, authors who argue that the name Martinchel derives from the primitive patron saint São Martinho or from the name of a settler with the name Martim or Martinho.
