New Town is a rapidly growing, suburb, satellite city of Kolkata. It has come up to be the next big IT hub in Kolkata. It has Indias first road with Wi-fi connectivity for a stretch of 10.5-km. connecting to the Main Arterial road to the Airport. The suburb has been declared as the Solar City by the previous government and there are plans to develop it into Smart Green City.
New Town is extensively served by air conditioned, non-AC government and private buses, taxi. The New Garia Airport line of the Kolkata Metro is supposed to pass through New Town by 2014.[9][10] There is also a plan to extend the Circular Railway from Bidhannagar Road (Ultadanga) to New Town via lake town and salt lake. The Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport is close to the township.
New Town, Rajarhat has many educational institutions, from prep schools to a university. Some of the well-known universities are -Presidency University, St. Xaviers University, Rabindra Bharati University, IIT Kharagpur Research Park, Institute of Engineering and Management, Aliah University, Aliah University, Science & Technology Campus, Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management, Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and Ramakrishna Mission Centre of Excellence. It has a host of advanced medical facilities; the most notable among them is the intensive care hospital and state-of-the-art Tata Cancer Centre.
New Town has a lot of shopping arcades and recreation centres like, Aquatica a water park, children's park called Nicco Park, traditional Indian yoga and spa facilities, called Vedic Village. Shopping malls in New Town which are operating are, City Centre 2, Axis Mall, and Home Town Mall. There are upcoming malls like Unitech Downtown Mall, Rajarhat Central Mall and Centrus Mall.
The real estate is fast growing in New Town due to the fast developing infrastructure and the proposed infrastructure.
