The capital of the western state of Gujarat,
Gandhinagar is situated about 23 kilometres north of
Ahmedabad. On the west-central point of the industrial corridor between
Delhi and
Mumbai and is positioned on the west bank of the
Sabarmati River.
City infrastructure
The nearest airport is Ahmedabads Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport, around 18 km from
Gandhinagar. The Gandhinagar Capital railway station has many trains on the western zones passing through the city. The closest rail junction is
Ahmedabad Railway Station, which provides connectivity to all key cities and towns of India. There also is a proposal for a Metro Link Express between
Gandhinagar and
Ahmedabad to introduce rapid transport into the city. When it comes to road connectivity, National Highway-8 links the city to
Surat,
Mumbai, and Navi
Mumbai, while National Highway 8C connects it to
Ahmedabad,
Jaipur,
Udaipur, New
Delhi, and
Chandigarh. A bus rapid transport system is also being planned to connect
Gandhinagar and
Ahmedabad.
Gandhinagar is one of the cities chosen to be developed under the Centres Smart Cities Mission.
