Ranchi is the capital of Jharkhand. The third most populous city of the state,
Ranchi is situated in the southern part of the Chota
Nagpur plateau. It is often called the City of Waterfalls because of its numerous waterfalls, the most famous ones being Dassam Falls, Hundru Falls, Jonha Flls, Hirni Falls, and Panchghagh Falls.
Ranchi lies at a distance of 420 kilometres from
Kolkata and 125 kilometres from
Jamshedpur. It is one of the fastest growing Tier III cities.
City Infrastructure
Ranchi hosts the Birsa Munda Airport which has direct flights from major Indian cities such as,
Patna,
Delhi,
Mumbai,
Bangalore,
Pune,
Chennai,
Kolkata, etc. Recently, a new international terminal has been made ready to facilitate the handling of 500 domestic and 200 international passengers. It is spread over 19,676 square meters of land furnished with imported equipment from China, Germany, and Singapore. The research institutions of
Ranchi include ICAR Research Complex for Eastern Region, Indian Institute for Natural Resins and Gums, and Indian Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology, Gharkhatanga. A ring road is under construction which will go around the city and reduce burgeoning traffic. The busiest parts of
Ranchi will also soon witness three flyovers which are believed to decongest the city roads. All the major roads and national highways in the area are being upgraded to six or eight lanes.
Ranchi is amongst the 100 Indian cities under the Smart Cities Mission.

There are several residential properties in
Ranchi which are under construction, and the rapid over all development of the city has significantly contributed to the growth of real estate sector here. The employment opportunities are also on the rise, which further boosts the demand of property in the city. It is being noted that the preference of homebuyers is shifting from independent houses to 2 BHK apartments. This has led to the increase in the number of upcoming flats and made the city an attractive destination for realty investments. Ranchi boasts of a number of tourist attractions, with the most popular ones being Rock Garden and Kanke Dam (Gonda Hills), Hundru Falls, Jonha Falls, Panchghagh Falls, Dassam Falls, Hirni Falls, Nakshatra Van, Jharkhand War Memorial, and
Jagannathpur Temple. Several festivals are celebrated here with great enthusiasm, including Karma, Manasa Puja, Rath Yatra, Chhath Puja, Basant Panchami, and so on.
Ranchi is the centre for numerous sport activities, with the prominent stadiums being Jaipal Singh Stadium, JSCA International Cricket Stadium, Birsa Munda Hockey Stadium, Birsa Munda Athletics Stadium, and Birsa Munda Football Stadium. The International Library and Cultural Centre is a major public library in the city.
